Humans like to build cities that hit for the sky , but sometimes they also build downwardly . Whether for aegis , or just because they can , we ’ve create many metropolis beneath the Earth ’s Earth’s crust – or excavate deep into the rocky face of mountains . Here are nine of the most awesome .

1. Petra
establish in Jordan in the 2nd century by the Nabataeans , this massive monastery is just one of century of dwellings carved into the rocks .
2. Barry Troglodyte Village
mass have lived forhundreds of year in this village , carve into the rock of a hillside drop Rhone , France . Some of the sculpture in the part look downright spooky , like this skull face , but others are simply doors and window into homes that stretch back into informal caves .

3. Moose Jaw
Beneath the street of Saskatchewan , Canada town Moose Jaw , there lurks an extensive mesh of tunnels , full of what were once shops , mill , home , and speakeasy . Rumor has it that Al Capone used them for smuggling , and that Chinese immigrant live and operate there in the nineteenth and early 20th centuries . 4. Leavenworth
Beneath the streets of this small Kansas town , occupant recently discovered three blocks of abandoned storefronts . No one is sure what they were used for . Were they the family of bunk slave , who hid from authorities ? A oasis for bootleggers in the 1920s ? Or was it simply a part of townspeople that was abandoned and turned into landfill for the Leavenworth we cognise today ?
5. Montreal
Connected to underground stations and shopping districts , Montreal ’s “ underground city , ” or Réso , boasts 20 miles of tunnels , making it the prominent such installation in the entire cosmos .
6. Derinkuyu
This ancient Turkish metropolis could domiciliate up to 20 thousand people , reached eleven stories below ground , and was built in the seventh or eighth century by Christian villagers hiding from persecution and bandit . Central Turkey , love as Cappadocia , is full of underground cities because the volcanic rock and roll in the region is so soft that people can carve burrow cursorily .
7. Cheyenne Mountain
Once home to NORAD , this underground metropolis was built beneath Colorado ’s Cheyenne Mountain to book 1000 of hoi polloi and withstand a nuclear attack . The berth was used almost entirely for streak before and during Prohibition , and garner the nickname “ Shanghai Tunnels ” because unwary sailors were often “ shanghaied ” – drug while drinking , only to retrieve themselves aboard a ship the next day , where they had to work until they reach another port .
