They grew up in Arizona

Emma and Spencer spent their childhood in Scottsdale, Arizona, a city located just outside of Phoenix. In a 2015 interview with actressDiane KeatonforInterview Magazine,she said her family lived on the 16th hole of a golf course.
“It once said on Wikipedia that my parents owned the golf course, which could not be further from the truth,” theLa La Landactress said. “But if you’re in Arizona, you’re at least within a couple miles of, if not on, a golf course.”
For two months every summer, Krista, Emma and Spencer would escape the desert heat and go to the beach in Coronado, California. The actress told directorCameron Crowein a 2012 interview forInterview Magazinethat if they hadn’t, they would have spent their summers “in a cold, dark room watching movies.”
They put on shows together as kids

As the elder sibling, Emma always dragged her little brother into her creative pursuits. Spencer told theArizona Republicthat they would put on shows together as kids.
“She was the director and bossed me around tremendously,” he said. “She would be the star of the show and I would be everyone else.”
In addition to creating shows, they’d watch them together. While walking the red carpet for the 2017 SAG Awards, Spencer and Emma toldEntertainment Weeklythat their favorite movie to watch as a family was the 1979Steve MartincomedyThe Jerk.
“[The Jerk] was my dad’s favorite,” the actress toldW Magazinein 2011. “I wasn’t really a tomboy, but I was loud. And bossy. I wanted to be Steve Martin.”
He has worked as a stunt double
