Apple may shave a few millimeters from succeeding iPods and iPhones by using a new patent of invention for a unexampled audio jack . The gadget uses Pogo pins as conductive contacts .
Current iPods use a standardcantileverdesign . A cantilever is a metal beam that is folded inside the case , providing a contact with the alloy stereo plug . When you put the plug inside the jack , the beams deform , but present enough resistance to make a honorable tangency with the hoopla ’s airfoil . However , to have enough resistance , they need to have an adequate size of it , which is too heavy for Apple at this point .
The Modern patent employsPogo pin , which have been used for a retentive time in electronics to provide with temporary connections between circuit boards . The Cray-2 supercomputer , for exemplar , used these pings to sandwich circuit board together . ThePogo pingsare tiny devices which check a pin inside a metal cylinder . The pin will pull back whenever you get the plug inside the jack , but keeps the middleman thanks to a bound inside the piston chamber . [ Apple Insider ]
