Last night ’s episode of Agentsof SHIELD was sort of weird . Like , tonally weird . I was n’t sure what I wassupposed to be feel — until the last , which was pleasingly creeptastic andjacked up . Most of all , I was wondering if these guys are really say to beheroes , given how they behave .
spoiler ahead …
So the principal plot of “ TAHITI”revolves around saving Skye from her fateful slug wounds , inflicted in theprevious installment . And save Skye , in turn , need figure out how Coulsonwas really brought back from the all in . We already saw the weird surgery theydid on Coulson ’s brain and the tons of procedure they do to resuscitatehim , but now it turn out there was some miracle drug that regenerate hisperforated inwardness .

And that miracle drug turns out to be the product of a weirdcreature preserve in a cooler with thermionic valve coming out of it , in the basement of asecret facility in the middle of nowhere . This creature is so unearthly andexploited , seeing it gross out out Coulson to the point where he suddenly decidesit ’s not a good idea to inject Skye with the miracle drug after all .
The uncanny creature is a nifty moment , and decidedly lends abit of mad gravitas to this episode — plus rack up yet another notch on the“SHIELD is an evil organization ” side of the leger .
But like I pronounce , this sequence is tonally eldritch . Like , thestory is imagine to be about our hoagy getting push to their limits bygrief , to the point where they go off the rail and do something crazy to saveSkye . It should be full of misery and desperation — but after a reasonably sadopening , the literal tincture of the rest of the installment is lay - back , jocular andeven breezy . Mostly , this is because the show somehow managed to score BillPaxton as a recurring guest star , playing Agent John Garrett , and Paxton bringssuch a favorable , easy - going vibration that everybody else just falls into it .

The end upshot of this is that we wind up watching Coulson’steam acting in an utterly unconscionable manner , while seeming kind of mellowand happy about it — it ’s strong to conciliate their actions with the tone ofthis episode .
What are the non - larger-than-life things in this episode ?
Nobody thinks beatingup an unarmed prisoner is excessive

It ’s not just that Melinda May goes into the interrogationroom and beats Ian Quinn to a crashing pulp — it ’s that nobody seems to thinkthat was cross a pedigree . There ’s even a weird scene where Grant Ward tellsMelinda that he like see her brutalize an unarmed , immobilized adult male , becauseshe does n’t show her emotion that often . And I guess any show of emotion , however brutal and unfitting , is safe than just acting in a professionalmanner . I acknowledge Quinn shot Skye , but that does n’t excuse violating the Geneva Conventionon him .
Or making explicitplans to polish off the prisoner if your broker dies
That ’s just weird . So Garrett shows up with three planer , because Coulson was guess to hand Quinn over to SHIELD for interrogation . But once Coulson tells Garrett that he has a dying agent on control board , and they’rerushing to try and save her , Garrett all alter his melodic line and resolve to goalong for the ride — because of course , if Skye die out , Coulson will be totallyjustified in hit his prisoner . That just go without saying . Of course , at the oddment of the sequence , Coulson try on to dissemble he never said he wouldthrow Quinn out of the planer if Skye died . But he and Garrett deal a knowinglook when Garrett agrees to let Coulson keep Quinn . And there ’s no other reasonto keep Quinn on Coulson ’s plane . Even aside from the ethical motive of off anunarmed prisoner in cold origin — doing what Quinn did to Skye — there ’s alsothe stupidity of killing a valuable source of intel . If Coulson had someplot - related grounds for need to keep Quinn , that would be one thing . But heliterally just hangs on to Quinn so he can possibly take retaliation .

Or threatening to ripthat prisoner ’s tongue out
But then Garrett decides he can interrogate Quinn on boardCoulson ’s reverse lightning — something he does kind of a bad job of . Like , Quinn startstelling them about Deathlok , and they do n’t follow up on it at all . But also , Garrett build a great deal of secernate Quinn he has no right and no attorney , andthey can rip his tongue out and stuff . The threats of torture may be idle ones , but they still have n’t disciplined the agentive role who thump up this same captive , and Garrett seems pretty excited about the idea of excruciate his prisoner .
They ’re playing intothe Clairvoyant ’s hands

This is sort of the crux of the episode . The Clairvoyantreally , really wants toknow how Coulsoncame back from the utter — so much so , that he snatch and tortured Coulson awhile back . This is purportedly the one opus of information the Clairvoyantcan’t simply see . And Quinn comes out and allow that he tear Skye to forceCoulson to dig into the mechanics of his own Resurrection of Christ — so Coulson isplaying into the Clairvoyant ’s hands with his mission to save Skye . Nobodystops to consider that saving Skye ’s life could wind up causing G ormillions more deaths down the line of reasoning .
They slay twoinnocent soldiers to save Skye ’s life
mayhap I missed it in all the turmoil , but does anybodycomment on this at all ? Those soldiers that Coulson , Garrett and the othersslaughter are not opposition combatants — they ’re SHIELD ’s own citizenry . Or at least , they’re tie in to SHIELD . They are just trying to ward a facility thatCoulson does n’t have authorization to get inside . And Garrett seems downrightgleeful about doing this the hard way , letting his gun speak for him . Not tomention , when the adeptness is blow up in a final failsafe , there ’s noguarantee it was wholly empty aside from those two guard . Coulson is willingtomurder two of his own people in coldblood to preserve Skye ’s lifetime .

On the positive side though , I really care Agent Triplett ( BJBritt ) and hope he and Simmons do get together — their scenes together werereally cunning .
