Last night was the unveiling of io9 pal Phil “ bad astronomer ” Plait ’s new Discovery show , Bad Universe . It was an explodey investigating of what would materialise if Earth were hit with an asteroid , and how we could forbid it .
There ’s a distinctly Mythbusters feeling to this show , partially because one of Plait ’s goal is to expose “ junk science , ” especially the stuff you see in Hollywood movies . And he ’s not just going to tell you how asteroid work out – Plait lead to EMRTC in New Mexico to simulate an asteroid impact with a huge amount of TNT :

What form this show so terrific is Plait ’s animated geekery , and his readiness with the tonic civilisation where most of his audience has probably learned a lot of ( often bad ) skill . I also apprise how much Plait emphasise ways to stave off the tragedy he shows . Sure , there ’s hilarity in recreating mega - explosions , but there ’s also a deputation behind the madness . Plait wants our scientific communities to be inclined to help lay aside the world when we ’re jeopardize by a giant rock from space – which , he points out , we are bond to be , and probably sooner rather than later .
Good scientific discipline , awful experimentation with attack , and levelheaded solutions to Earth - threaten problems ? bless me up . It ’s not a certain affair that Plait ’s show will be picked up for series yet , so permit ’s hope Discovery Channel makes the correct conclusion and gives us more sorry Universe !
