The real reason The 100 is such a capital show is n’t its beautiful actors or itsbadass fight scene . We have it away this show forthe way characters are put in insufferable situations , so that we can watch them make hard — sometimes dismaying — choices , that add up tad to their personalities and cause them to acquire .

Well , Bellamy made an appalling choice recently . Only this time , it was a pick that came with none of the context of use , motivation , or character reference growing that The 100 is usually so good at serve up up . In fact , it just feel improper . In my view , this storyline came dangerously close to ruin the show entirely — fortunately , enough other fascinating developments come about in episode six that this does n’t seem to be the font , for now .

Still , Bellamy ’s selection undercuts everything the show has stood for , and we need to talk about it .

Turn back now if you have n’t watched past Season 3 , episode 3 of The 100 . You have been warned .

Look , Bellamy , like everyone else in his banding of scrappy not - really - teenager - anymore , has had a crap life since hitting the ground . They ’ve been attack , imprisoned , and victimized repeatedly by the other people living on Earth . They ’ve witnessed unspeakable repulsion , watched friends and loved ones pass , and off the innocent to survive . The original 100 ( now 40 - something ? ) have been through hell , and some of then have snapped . Finn ’s psychotic break in Season 2 , and Jasper ’s alcohol - fueled volute into a pit of depression after the struggle at Mount Weather , are two big exercise of a character taking a shocking bout , when his circumstances became too much to bear .

Both Finn and Jasper ’s character developments were upsetting — but they were motivated . We understood incisively why these characters changed , and the modification added complexity to their personalities .

Starship Test 9

None of this is true for Bellamy ’s staring about - typeface in episode 5 of Season 3 , when he decides to ally himself with Pike , and take part in the hoi polloi slaughter of hundreds of their Grounder allies , the people who were perplex on Earth while the Sky Crew survived the devastation in an orbiting artificial satellite . While the show has n’t been diffident about kill droves of people in the yesteryear , this was the first time I felt gross out by it . And while I really ca n’t stand Pike — a one - dimensional zealot who has stood for nothing other than unsighted hate of Grounders since the show introduced him — this decision is totally consistent with his character .

For Bellamy , though , it does n’t make any sense at all . The show does a piss inadequate task go under up Bellamy ’s motivations for betraying essentially everyone in his life so he can come after a meathead on a murderous rampage .

Clearly , Bellamy feels guilty about the latest tragedy at Mount Weather , where his conclusion to bank a Grounder ended up get a crowd of Sky Crew killed . But this is n’t the first time the great unwashed have become flat on Bellamy ’s lookout man , and in other instances , he ’s found the Grounders to be well allies than his own people . He ’s well mindful of the complex political state of affairs with the Grounders , and in the yesteryear , he ’s never viewed them in black - and - white terms .

And yet somehow , after this recent incident , a five - moment conversation with Pike convinces Bellamy that all Grounders are manslayer , who need to die before they pour down Sky Crew ? Even though he sleep together that his people just struck a peace of mind tidy sum with their leader , and that the Grounder army is a thousand times bigger than his ?

Maybe Bellamy is extra enraged , because his new girlfriend was just kill — but if that was the show ’s attempt to add weight to the situation , it was a dud . We barely hump her . I ca n’t even remember her name right now . Is this somehow motivated by his newfound angriness at Clarke for allow the Sky Crew camp , Arkadia ? Bellamy helped Clarke leave behind , and it was one of the most grownup things he ’s done .

Whatever spur Bellamy ’s recent choice , it does n’t derive across . or else , the sudden translation of one of the show ’s protagonists from a reasoned human being who carefully weigh his action and always questions authority to Pike ’s henchman feel like a treachery of his character .

There were a few sign in episode 5 and 6 that Bellamy ’s sense of right and wrong is starting to kick in — he stop over his crew from killing Indra , for one , and he seemed to experience a abbreviated pang of remorse at the thought of massacre an innocent village . But I ’m not certain this is a stumble his character will recuperate from . As I say before , I ’m still savor this show a sight ( holy bullshit , the City of Light game is really sire move ! ) , but bed with Bellamy ’s character like this set a distressing precedent .

Because this is a show that , until now , has differentiated itself from the smorgasbord of other post - apocalyptical worlds in skill fiction by portraying a future where citizenry are driven by more than heedless tribalism . Where enemies and allies can total from anywhere .

If Bellamy can no longer see that , I guess I ’m relieved that Clarke , Lexa , and others still can . As it is , his botched plot line is a huge admonition sign that The 100 might be starting to careen out of control .
