Bitch Planet # 1came out earlier this month from Image Comics , introducing us to dystopian futurity created by writer DeConnick ( Pretty Deadly , Captain Marvel ) and artist Valentine De Landro ( X - Factor ) . In the future , women who are determine non - compliant are sent to the Auxiliary Compliance Outpost , usually have a go at it as “ Bitch Planet . ” There , everyone from murderers from womanhood who have disobey their husbands are at the mercy of the guards , while creepy Monitor oversee everything .

The women of Bitch Planet come from all walk of life , all races and body types . We spoke with DeConnick about what we can expect from Bitch Planet , the challenges of writing in the victimization genre , and why feminist movement and strip are such a natural fit .
What drew you to exploitation as a musical style ?
You know , it was something I really loved when I was younger . And I had an interesting experience , because I also loved [ Sergio ] Leone western when I was growing up . And when I was working on Pretty Deadly , I go back and rewatched a bunch of these horse opera and I still loved them . They still really bear up . They ’re extraordinary . And then I run and rewatched a lot of these old victimisation films and — oh my god ! They ’re horrible ! I could n’t make it through them . I ’d get to the peak where the rape scene is underscored with soft , romantic music and I ’m care , “ I ’m out ! ”
Yeah , so it was something that I remember fondly and as being kind of progressive and badass , and when I went back and in reality watched , was like , “ Oh , oh , transgressive , yes . reform-minded , not as much . ”
So in this volume are you more looking to catch your memory of you cerebrate exploitation was when you were younger ?
You know , I do n’t screw that I ’m seek to do that . I ’m endeavor to act with — yeah , maybe , maybe . I ’m sample to play with those things that I wish and figure out why I wish them and trying to reckon out if I can do a Koran that ’s overtly political and also have it be fun . There ’s a good deal of inquiry that I ’ve posed to myself and to Val : Can we do using without being exploitative ? Can we have a book that ’s overtly political and have it still be fun ? One of the thing that I really wish about the first emergence is the way you make the readers moderately compliant in what ’s going on . You have the monitors watching all the action , but at the same meter , we are the admonisher .
number three opens with the line , “ I ca n’t see you but I can feel you evaluate me . ” And it ’s Penny and she ’s talking about the people who are watch her at that instant , but she ’s also talking to you .
Oh , I eff Penny . I was n’t certain what to make of her at first , but then she literally dives right into the action .
Yeah , I ’m terrified that something is go bad to fall out to Penny . I do n’t know ; it is not part of the program that something has to happen to Penny . But I ’m afraid there ’s going to come a point where something where something is going to happen to Penny , because there ’s not too many hoi polloi who are belong to get through this okay .
Should we not get too sequester to any of these characters ?
Yeah , take in yourself .
I ’m very intrigued by Kamau Kogo , even though she hardly says anything in the first issue .
I always care lineament like the Man with No Name [ from Sergio Leone ’s dollar sign Trilogy ] and Deathface Ginny [ from Pretty Deadly ] . I like characters that do n’t just tell you everything .
It ’s interesting to be reading you writing Captain Marvel and you writing this at the same time , because they feel like very unlike feminist texts . Is this a desire to explore different angle of what women have to put up with ?
I do n’t sit down to write feminism , you cognise ? Bitch Planet is certainly overtly feminist and so is Captain Marvel , but I would contend that Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel was overtly feminist when I was seven years old . I had nothing to do with that . And honestly , if you cogitate my books are broad , you should interpret the 1977 version , because they are subtle like a sledgehammer . Bitch Planet is very clearly feminist , but I do n’t sit down down and I do n’t approach it like I ’m writing a flier . What ’s of import to me is the characters and the story .
And my feminism is understandably very authoritative to me , but it ’s about paleness across the add-in . And I think that ’s what a lot of comic are about . I mean , comic strip traditionally in this country there ’s a Brobdingnagian domination of the superhero genre , and superheroes are about standing up for the minuscule hombre and candor and equality of opportunity . And those are the same things that feminism is about . I do n’t understand why people line up this a novel pairing . It seems to me the most born affair in the human race . I find it peculiar that anybody could be a openhanded Steve Rogers buff and not consider themselves a feminist , because it seems to me that everything he stands for is everything that women’s lib stands for .
Are we decease to see what befall more off the satellite as well ?
Yeah , you are go to see a whole lot of the government and the bureaucracy back home . And a little bit of the day - to - Clarence Shepard Day Jr. on Earth , but a good deal of governmental hijinks .
And the federal agency hologram , is she an AI ?
Every third exit is the biography of one of the characters . You chance out a minuscule bit about them and how they got to the planet . And the pink woman , we call her “ the simulation , ” because she ’s the deference fashion model . And the model will have a third issue , a bio exit . Are you getting grim of Orange is the New Black comparisons with flaunt back to how the grapheme wound up in prison house ?
Not really , because I have n’t find Orange is the New Black , on use . I understand it ’s really , really good , but I ’m super scared of being paralyzed by it . And I ’m doing something very dissimilar . I ’m just worried . Like , if I had known that they did that , I would have been like , “ Oh , we ca n’t do it . ” But I did n’t find out until I had already said it ; it was already in the whole kit and caboodle .
So I ’m staying away from it , which is hilarious , because we judge to be determine by old stuff and nonsense , but try not to be influence by modern-day stuff , and I do n’t sympathize why I do that precisely . But I gauge I want to make certain that I ’m telling the news report that Val and I require to secernate and not let myself get frightened aside from anything because I ’m afraid I wo n’t do it as well .
