The ideologic debate about whether Wakanda has a duty to open its borders to share its wealth and technology and aid make the world a good place is arguably one of the most fascinating parts of Ryan Coogler ’s Black Panther . The interrogation weighed heavily on actor Chadwick Boseman ’s mind as he train to play Wakanda ’s king , T’Challa . And interestingly , it led him to a complicated thought about his character reference .
Duringa recent discussionwith co - wizard Lupita Nyong’o and Black Panther funny author Ta - Nehisi Coates , Boseman described how , in conceptualizing his take on T’Challa , he number to see him as something of a villain . Though he may not be the manslayer that Erik Killmonger is , Boseman said , T’Challa represent something just as dangerous :
“ I actually am the enemy . It ’s the enemy I ’ve always known . It ’s office . It ’s having privilege . I do n’t lie with if we as African - Americans would accept T’Challa as our submarine sandwich if he did n’t go through Killmonger because Killmonger has been through our struggle , and [ T’Challa has n’t ] . ”
While Black Panther does an excellent job of present Killmonger in such a way that makes you immediately sympathise and describe with him and understand his worldview , the film is much more elusive in its critiques of T’Challa , though they are there .
Boseman make an splendid , of import point . T’Challa was born into the lap covering of sumptuosity , and while he does n’t hew out to Wakanda ’s isolationist tradition quite as strongly as some of the citizenry around him , he does glean the benefits of a brawny African nation that ’s neglected the predicament of the African diaspora for C . Like Killmonger , T’Challa ’s complicated and imperfect , qualities that make both of them such compelling , human quality . If only more of the players in the MCU could say the same .
