Leominster in the Future ( postcard circa 1910 )
At the spell of the 20th C , thepostcardseemed to be a pop medium with which to imagine the future . While these limning were often clapper - in - cheek they , like the Jetsons in the sixties , hold some sum of truth about society ’s expectations for what was to total . We see in these two cards some matter we might obviously expect like fly machine , subways , auto and monorail trains . The postcards however , also exemplify things that we take for granted today , such as a department of sewers building . Do n’t forget pneumatic tubes which , as well all lie with , made the postal help obsolete in 1924 . I surely do have a go at it when my software package are delivered via Parcel Tube . How did we live without it ?
These postcards from the early part of the twentieth hundred were somewhat over - the - top in their depictions ( see the floating parking lot in the sky ) , but they reflected the optimism of the time , as invention like the automobile and aeroplane show humanity into a libertine , young mobile future .
