Key players in the fight between Apple and the government are evidence at a Congressional hearing today — but the most interesting remark so far came from a Rep. John Conyers ( D - Mich. ) , who suggest that the government is trying to exploit a terrorist attack to extend its surveillance broadcast .
Conyers explicitly question the need of the government during time allow for questioning . He said he trust the governance ’s alternative to ask a federal magistrate to allow for special access , instead of asking Congress , has to do with a letterobtainedby the Washington Post last year . That letter was written by Director of National Intelligence general counsel Robert Litt .
“ The legislative surround is very uncongenial today , ” Littwrote in the memorandum . “ It could turn in the event of a terrorist attack or criminal issue where inviolable encryption can be prove to have hindered jurisprudence enforcement . ”

“ I ’m deeply concerned by this cynical mentality , and I would be deeply disappointed if it is regain that the government was exploiting a national calamity , ” Conyers aver .
Conyers also question the government ’s use of the All Writs Act to compel Apple , referencingthe Margaret Court orderissued yesterday in a New York - based drug case that turn away use of the same enactment to compel Apple to unlock a defendant ’s earphone .
