Isaac Asimov ’s First Law of Robotics state that “ a robot may not injure a human being or , through inaction , allow a human being to arrive to harm . ” That sounds round-eyed enough — but a recent experiment shows how severe it ’s going to be to get machines to do the right thing .
Roboticist Alan Winfield of Bristol Robotics Laboratory in the UK recently set up an experimentation to examine a simplify version of Asimov ’s First Law . He and his squad programmed a robot to prevent other automatons , acting as proxy for man , from falling into a jam .
New Scientist ’s Aviva Rutkinexplainswhat happened next :

At first , the robot was successful in its task . As a human proxy go towards the hole , the robot bucket along in to press it out of the path of peril . But when the team added a second human proxy revolve toward the hole at the same time , the robot was squeeze to choose . Sometimes , it managed to save one human while letting the other perish ; a few times it even contend to save both . But in 14 out of 33 trials , the golem knock off so much time fret over its decision that both humans vanish into the jam . Winfield depict his automaton as an “ ethical zombie ” that has no choice but to conduct as it does .
