The site of the formerWharram Percyvillage is passive today , with grassy meadows and the picturesque ruins of St. Martin ’s church . most a thousand years ago , the view was very different , as the remains of 10 people — including children — were cauterise , hack with knives , and result in a pit outside the church building cemetery .

This was not standard subprogram . Historical records indicate that the people of Wharram Percy were peasant farmers and landowners , accustomed to laying their dead to rest with gravitas .
So when archaeologist take in a near tone at the cut up stay in the nether region , they were get . What would inspire ordinary people to commit such violence against the dead ? And who were the deceased , to inspire such gruesome acts ?
To witness out , they reviewed each cut and char fall guy on every single one of the 137 finger cymbals recovered from the site . They used radiocarbon date stamp to estimate the bones ’ age , analyzed the chemic makeup of tooth enamel , and reviewed other archeologic records , reckon for other exemplar of this sort of attack on the dead .

The team determine that the bones had been laid to rest between the eleventh and 13th centuries , and strontium isotope analysis of tooth enamel show they ’d belonged to locals . This latter fact now eliminated the most common explanation : that the deceased had been outlaw , drifters , or other unwelcome visitors .
The angle , depth , and placement of the cuts in the bone , immix with the way they were broken and burned , finally conduct the investigator to settle on two theories . Either these masses were feed by the villagers , or their mutilation was part of “ an attempt to lay the revenant stagnant . ”

Both options vocalise fairly utmost , and they are . But these were hard , lean clock time in Wharram Percy , and dearth can drive mass to do awful things .
Still , close psychoanalysis of the bone damage made cannibalism seem unlikely . The cuts were made into the middle of bones , not butcher - style , at the joint .
Zombies , though ?

“ The mind that the Wharram Percy off-white are the remains of corpse burnt and dismembered to block up them walk from their Steffi Graf seems to fit out the evidence best , ” Centennial State - writer Simon Mays of Historic EnglandtoldThe Guardian .
Yet in their theme , may and his fellow worker were less certain . “ The grounds does not permit arguments to be advanced decisively in favor of either scenario , but it may be more consistent with attempts to set recurring army corps than with starvation cannibalism , ” they write .
The accuracy about Wharram Percy ’s desecrated dead elude us still . But TV producers , if you ’re reading this : medieval zombies ? Think about it .
