WhenAnthony Andersonhosts the 75th annualPrimetime Emmy Awardson Jan. 15, theblack-ishalum will be joined one of his all-time favorites: his motherDoris Bowman.

The two have a very close relationship, even documenting their European travels in E!‘sTrippin’ With Anthony Anderson and Mama Dorislast year — and Anderson, 53, exclusively teases to PEOPLE in this week’s issue how Bowman will play a key role in Sunday’s ceremony.

“I can’t host the Emmys without having Mama Doris on the stage with me, so we’re finding some smart ways to incorporate her into the show,” he explains.

As is tradition at awards shows of this magnitude, when a winner goes long on their acceptance speech, music plays to nudge them off stage. But at this year’s Emmys, the 70-year-old fan favorite mom will appear instead to nudge over-talkers to the wings.

Anderson continues, “So we’re going to see what kind of fun we can have without stepping on anyone’s toes, because we know people have points to make, thank-yous to make and mission statements to make during an acceptance speech. We have to be courteous to all the other nominees and actors who may be winning that night and courteous to the audience members who are watching at home.”

While Anderson isn’t playing favorites, he is wishing luck to Black nominees includingQuinta Brunson,Dominique Fishback,Ayo Edebiri,Janelle JamesandSheryl Lee Ralph. (PalsKeke PalmerandStorm Reidalready won awards for their work last year at this past weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony.)

“I’m rooting for everybody Black, but I’m rooting for everybody. It’s hard to do what we do. There is a science and there is a craft to it,” he says. “I’m just excited to be at the helm hosting one of the biggest nights in Hollywood.”
