Linda Codega , io9 : What makes Red Sonja such a powerful , memorable character ?

Gail Simone : I ’ve thought about this a luck , in person . There are thou of she - warrior type , but there remain only one Red Sonja . She abide many different treatments in many different media , and people who love her , they do it her with a passion that is incredibly endearing .

My own female parent was the person who win over me to first write the fibre , and she ’s never read a mirthful Good Book in my life story to my noesis … she just loves Red Sonja . There ’s something in the role that has inspire her all her life , and I ’ve met multitude like that all over the mankind .

Everyone loves something unlike about her . For me , it ’s her lack of excuse for who she is … most of us stumble through life hiding who we are , and asking people to forgive us every clock time we make the slightest social error . Sonja lives , fights and loves and asks no one ’s free pardon . It ’s endearing .

But also , the Sojourner Truth is , I think she simply has that hush-hush element , that principal power , that makes one person a in effect singer and the other person Elvis or Beyoncé . In any story , when Sonja enter the room , you experience a good sentence is on the way .

io9 : What are you most excited about with this adaption ?

Simone : Well , I find incredibly lucky to be working with Orbit , who have been the best publisher anyone could enquire for . They ’ve been there for me ( and Sonja ! ) every step of the way . They made us feel fabulously welcome and treasure , and I ’m very grateful for that . Their enthusiasm for our badass warrior is extremely gratifying . My first rapid climb call with their squad , they were wearing cosplay of fiber I ’d write , they had my graphic novels and merch on exhibit , it just felt like I belong immediately .

How I ended up with Sonja in the first place , it ’s a queer account , I briefly had a niggling free fourth dimension in my schedule , and the publisher , Nick Barrucci of Dynamite Comics , asked me to drop a line Sonja . I did n’t have much time , my mom begged me to do it , so I reluctantly agreed to do just six issues , no more . By the time I was on my second issue , I involve to do six more . Then six more . Then a Zero issue . Then a major company crossover event . Then ANOTHER crossover voter book with all distaff author like Tamora Pierce and Mercedes Lackey . io9 : This is your first prose novel ! What was that process like ?

Simone : Someone should have warned me that it ’s quite a lot of work , I intend ! I loved doing it , in comics , you ’re always worried about the amount of tangible acres on the page every scene takes up . Here , I could elaborate her world a bit . It is interesting though , I ’m used to having a bright artist realize the surrounding detail of the chronicle , here , I am task to do that myself , with the reader as carbon monoxide - conspirator and ocular creative person . It ’s an electrical outgrowth … I love it .

I find fortunate that I have a lot of A - list novelists to use as a sounding plug-in and inhalation . I really want a barn - burner story , and fortunately , that thought can transmigrate mediums .
