What get along first : the chicken or the dragon ? A recent interview with the team behind Game of Thrones ’ mighty beasts show how a visit to Trader Joe ’s helped make some of the most hefty fauna in the history of television .
Visual effects troupe Pixomondo of late chatted withGamespotabout the piece of work they ’ve done on the dragons for Game of Thrones . lead off in season 2 , Pixomondo has been contracted to design the fantastical creatures … from small babe hatchling to beaststhe size of 747s . concord to Pixomondo CEO Thilo Kuther , it was a tenacious and toilsome process figuring out how the dragons should look and move , and the squad had to think from the inside out to make them as realistic as possible . That ’s where a chicken came into play .
“ When they got bigger in Season 3 and 4 , there was a plenty of , ‘ So if a dragon is this big , how can it lift itself up ? What is it ? Is it a bat ? Or is it a bird ? Is it an bird of Jove ? ’ And the amount of energy that went into these discussions is beyond feeling , ” Kuther said . “ That ’s why they went to a Trader Joe ’s and corrupt a chicken , and took it aside , and said , ‘ So , how does that cultivate ? ’ ”
Kuther say they also conduct hint from bats and bird , watching YouTube video recording of them fly as inspiration . However , once the tartar grew to their full size , things started to change . It was no longer a tiny bird - comparable creature , but rather a massive being whose every hint mean seeing shifting tendons , rolled rib , and the ever - present threat of a perfervid approach . “ That ’s why they looked at elephants , where there is rougher and harsher peel , but then you have , around facial areas , their skin is softer , and when you touch it with your fingers , it would actually give in , ” Kuther said . “ When they shoot it , they unremarkably have a cushion where you may touch it and press your fingers in , so we ’re take that information and applying it to the skin . ”
Game of Thrones is currently in the midsection of output on its eighth and final season . The dragons are already at full size , intend Pixomondo wo n’t have to vex about changing them that dramatically … but there is the issue of Viserion , who ’s looking a mass more dead than common .
