Welcome to the first Gizmodo Monday Puzzle , a Modern serial in which I will pose thought - provoking challenges at the beginning of every hebdomad to jump your brain . I am a womb-to-tomb puzzle lover , sometime mystifier creator , and new Gizmodo puzzle writer . Many of the teasers posted here will be unmanageable — but they will be resolvable by the persistent among you , without the need for specialized knowledge or high - level mathematics . Some will be classics from the puzzle world , and many will be lesser - known gems . They will not be gimmicky , meaning that what the puzzle seems to be asking really is what it is asking . Puzzle #1: 10 Bags of Coins
You have 10 bag ; each old bag contains 10 coin . In nine of the bags , every coin weighs on the dot 1 gram . However , one of the bag throw counterfeit coins , which librate 1.1 g for each one . You do n’t know which bag contains the false coins , and the weight remainder is too subtle to experience with your hands . Luckily , you have a musical scale to aid . It expose a precise and accurate numerical readout ( for example , if you placed a raisin on the shell , it might display : “ .58 grams ” ) . Not so luckily , the graduated table ’s assault and battery is dying and after one utilization it will conk out . How can you identify the bag with the heavier coins using only a single weighing on the scale ? You are allowed to take coins out of their udder , but you only get to read one routine from the scale .
Like many large puzzler , this vocalise inconceivable at first . How can a undivided number leave enough information to find 10 fake coins out of 100 ? However , there is a beautiful and gimmick - free solution that is just a stroke of insight aside .
