Africa is one of the last great holdout for magnetic megafauna . But as the human population continues to grow and industrialize , lions , zebras , and elephants are being edged out of existence . A harrowing Modern serial by photographer Nick Brandt makes this translation visceral .
In Inherit the rubble , Brandt juxtapose the mill and urban wasteland circulate across East Africa with life - sized portrayal of animate being that once subsist there . The images are not Photoshop tricks , but rather , the lensman created the initiation during an across-the-board four - month travel hunting expedition . From a chimp resting in a moth-eaten alleyway to rhinos trampling through garbage mint , the series has a tragical beauty that exceed ethnic boundaries , cutting to the heart of what it means to live at the dawn of theAnthropocene . It ’s a call to activity to maintain Earth ’s remaining megafauna ; the vestige of a planetary heritage which once existed across Europe , Asia , Australia , and the Americas .
“ Mainly , it ’s about all of us , ” Brandt write in an accompanying Inherit the Dust photobook , which isnow useable for purchase . “ importantly , it ’s about the terrifying phone number of us , and the impingement of the very finite amount of outer space and resource for so many humans . ”
