ecologist have hit across some rather special worm on the remoteIsle of Rum , just off the coast of Scotland .
These common earthworms ( Lumbricus terrestris ) are three time the sizing of the worms found on the mainland , measure out up to 40 centimeters ( 1.3 understructure ) long and press a whopping 12.5 Gram ( 0.4 ounces ) .
expert from theEarthworm Research Groupfrom the University of Central Lancashire have been studying worms on the island since 1995 and think they grapple to reach this size from their undisturbed and isolated location .
They were found in Papadil , an abandoned settlement on the island . The Isle of Rum is home to only around 30 multitude and there are also very few innate predators , such as gram molecule , badgers , hedgehogs and foxes , which would usually hound out the worm . Unlike most animals , earthworms can continue to acquire even after they reach due date , so without the menace of becoming a mole ’s dinner party , they can uprise to these vast sizes .

Speaking to IFLScience , Dr Kevin Butt , who take the research , say : “ Normally they are prey by birds , mammalian , reptiles , amphibious aircraft , other invertebrate – and may only go for a mates of days at most .
“ However , some of the large mintage may be able-bodied to persist for more than this , for example I ’ve keptLumbricus terrestrisin the lab for five years . When given optimum weather of nutrient , filth , temperature , light , population concentration , they can grow very large . ”
Papadil is also invest with rich and fertile soils with a friable social structure – utter for these wiggling beasts to thrive . But in spell , the worms also help the grunge bionomics of this region of the island .
Dr Butt explicate toThe Telegraph , “ Without their activities we ’d be a lot spoilt off . They ’re just as important as bee are in pollinating plants . They facilitate air out the soil and drain away pee and stop surface wearing . ”
As impressive as these Scottish dirt ball may be , they ’ve begin nothing on thegiant earthwormsof Australia that can grow over 2 meters ( 6.6 feet ) long . It ’s always Australia , is n’t it ?
